Episodes (1)
Christiana Sudano, founder of Do Less Management, explains how she connects Nordic artists to LA and Nashville and why managers now handle artist development.
Questions these episodes answer
Why do artists need managers more than labels for development today?
Sudano says major labels now expect artists to arrive already developed, so managers have taken over the development work labels used to do, guiding an artist's sound, image and growth before any label gets involved.
How can an independent artist get an advance without a record label?
Sudano advises going to a performing rights organization for an advance, or to independent distributors like Vidya, Stem or the Orchard, which will front money based on current earnings, usually sized so the artist can pay it back within a year.
How much can a sync placement pay compared to getting a song on top 40 radio?
Sudano says getting a song onto top 40 radio can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to promote, while a single sync placement in a TV or film ad can pay an artist up to one hundred thousand dollars, making sync a strong revenue option for developing acts.
Why should Nordic artists visit LA or Nashville in person rather than email?
Sudano says in-person sessions and events are what actually get songs placed and get people to respond, since industry contacts see each other at events and follow up faster once they know they will run into you again, so she recommends visiting a few times a year.
What is Christiana Sudano's advice for someone starting out as a music manager?
Trust your gut over people with more seniority, do not be afraid to end business relationships that are not working, and make sure people know what you and your artists are doing, since consistent visibility works as free publicity for a manager's network.
