Alex Braga, artist and creator of the A-Mint AI instrument, explains why intention makes human music meaningful and machine output empty.

Questions these episodes answer

How does Alex Braga tell the difference between AI-generated music and human-made music?

The host notes that everything reaches a listener as the same digital ones and zeros, and Braga agrees the difference is not in what people hear. What matters is intention: a human musician pours a lifetime of fear, love, memory and identity into a piece, while a machine's output is only a statistically likely sequence with nothing behind it.

Is it true that most songs on Spotify are now made by AI?

Braga says Spotify gets around 100,000 new songs a week, and he claims more than two thirds are generated by the platform itself based on each listener's own data, often without listeners realizing they are hearing music built from their own taste rather than a human artist.

What happened when a producer used AI to fake an entire audience on Spotify?

Braga tells the story of Michael Smith, a producer who built an AI to write songs, another to upload them, and a third to create fake listeners who streamed them. The scheme made him around 10 million dollars before Spotify caught him, which Braga uses as proof that meaning has already left parts of the music industry.

Why does Alex Braga say a machine cannot replace human creativity?

Braga argues meaning comes from a physical process a machine cannot copy: humans process reality with both a brain and a gut microbiome, an ancient system of receptors that helps generate emotion and perception. Since a machine has no equivalent to this gut-level process, its outputs can be correct as data but never truly meaningful.
